Our Philosophy

Our curriculum and approach to teaching is a blend of several educational philosophies, with the Montessori method being a particularly influential component.

Our program focuses on developing each child’s:

  • Independence

  • Concentration

  • Self-control

  • Problem-solving

  • Creativity

  • Communication skills

  • Peer interactions

  • Confidence

  • Perseverance

  • Self-awareness

  • Listening skills

  • Connection to nature

Our teaching style is also informed by the seven principles of the Unitarian Universalist Church:

  •  Each and every person is important.

  • All people should be treated fairly and kindly.

  • We should accept one another and keep learning together.

  • Each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.

  • All people should have a vote about things that concern them.

  • We work for a peaceful, fair, and free world.

  • We care for our planet Earth, the home we share with all living things.

Parent Experience

“We had heard about Woodsong from friends who absolutely loved the school when I was inquiring about Montessori/Nature programs in the area, not even sure that I’d be able to find one (does it exist outside of the Nordic countries??). It does! This program was exactly what I was looking for and I’m so grateful that we have one in Rockford!

Ms. Lauren and Ms. Lindsay exhibit a deep respect for the children - helping to foster their emotional development, natural curiosity, and independence. There’s nothing my son loves more (and probably your toddler, too) than running around outside and interacting with the natural world around him. It’s hard to accommodate this desire of his all the time, especially when you have a younger child or a job. This program helps make more outdoor play possible along with so many added benefits, such as learning how to interact with peers. I am grateful for it every day and am sad at the prospect of our child aging out of it (in which case, any subsequent children will be signed right up)!”
